Timothy Newfield received a life sentence Friday morning in Marion County District Court for aggravated kidnapping and a 35-year minimum sentence for second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and aggravated burglary. Judge George F. Scott delivered the sentence to the solemn-faced Newfield.
John F. Wiebe, superintendent of the Marion-Florence school district, is the subject of this week’s Personality Profile. Wiebe didn’t just stumble into teaching. His parents and two brothers have been involved in the profession while his sister is married to a teacher at a private college.
The Marion Warriors varsity basketball team ended its regular season in mixed glory, winning its final home game but dropping its season finale Friday to Berean Academy.
Sophomore Stan Williams may live to be 100 but will never forget Friday night, Feb. 29, Leap Day. That’s the night he nearly defeated Berean’s B-team with help of his teammates’ 31 points. Stan himself dished in a record 41 points that night.
Marion City Clerk Lucille Britain, who has announced her resignation from that position, has filed on the Democratic ticket for county commissioner.
