The Bluegrass Jayhawker Band, made up of three members of the Nelson Funk family of Hillsboro and two other musicians from Newton, will present a variety of authentic bluegrass music during an afternoon program Old Settlers Day.
A four-year ritual of hauling Marion County prisoners to and from Harvey County Jail in Newton will end next year. Marion County commissioners voted Monday to accept a low bid for renovation of the obsolete jail in Marion.
The Marion County Record was notified this week that it won second place in general excellence nationally from Newspaper Editorial Workshop Services. First place went to the Mobridge Tribune in South Dakota for the second consecutive year.
Ambulances at Florence soon will have a new home, according to Bob Seward, director of the service. The new facility, at 415 N. Main St., will be completed by Grimmett Construction Co. in about a week.
Peaches grown by Mable Matz are the Record’s Produce Derby winner this week. Mable watered her peach tree, which is a volunteer, and it produced five dozen choice fruits.
Denice Bina entered two decorated cakes in competition at Kansas State Fair. Her wedding cake placed third, and her cake in the “man’s hobby” division, cleverly decorated to look like a can of Copenhagen snuff, placed second.
