A traditional election night vigil began early at Marion County Courthouse with spectators gathering before first returns arrived at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Reagan, Dole, Glickman, Karr, Westerhaus, Jost, Mueller, and DeForest were declared winners in county returns.

Jane Vajnar of Tampa is the winner of the Marion County Record essay contest on Freedom of the Press. She will receive a cash award of $35 from the newspaper, and her essay will be entered in a state competition.

Marion Warriors escaped a fourth quarter threat Friday night from St. Mary’s and boosted their season’s record to 5-3 — enough to assure them a winning season.

Beverly Bezdek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Valerian Bezdek of Florence, was a member of the queen’s court during homecoming festivities at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.

Eight girls from Marion were among the 27 Cadette Scouts who recently hiked a nature trail at John Redmond Reservoir near Burlington. Local scouts were Melanie Druse, Kelley Enos, Julia Gooding, Marcia Gooding, Wendy Hett, Brenda Smith, Leann Snelling, and Theresa Wynn.

Winners of door prizes last week at the grand opening of Schoneman Shoe Store under new owners Peggy and Leo Blackman include Bev Cooper, western boots; Delores Spencer, ladies dress shoes; Angie Walz, canvas shoes; Ron Cork, children’s shoes; and Debbie Grady, casual shoes.
