Charles Frans was named to be Chief of Police of Marion Monday night by Mayor Ira Newcomer, who is police commissioners. For several years there has not been a chief of the department. Other officers are Lyle Sanders and Harry Mott.
The ninth annual Flint Hills Hereford tour will be held July 23. Area herds to be visited include those of August Lalouette, Henry Waner and Sons, Ralph Melton, Rex Siebert, Glennon Crowther, Cecil Medley and Sons, and O.J. Shields.
A bolt of lightning set fire to a large barn on the Grimwood farm northeast of Florence Wednesday night and it was completely consumed. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Davidson live on the farm and lost a riding mare and colt in the fire.
Brenda Kay Foth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Foth, celebrated her sixth birthday July 10 with a party at her home. Guests were Laurie Brose, Ginger Helmer, Brenda Helmer, Deborra Case, Debra Vogt, Betty Linn, and Sandy Anderson.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hett of Florence this week purchased the 600-acre farm belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Greenemeyer of east of Marion. The Greenemeyers until recently managed the Peter Pan Ice Cream Store in Marion.
