James Meisner, Marion County Civil Defense director, this week announced that the Salina firm of Wilson and Company has been awarded a government contract to begin a survey of fallout shelters in central Kansas including Marion County.
Several more wells have swelled Marion County’s oil production and the area continues to be one of the busy sections of the state in exploration.
Clair Hawkins of Tampa, prominent Marion County farmer and former county commissioner, was honored last week as “an outstanding soybean farmer” at special ceremonies in Wichita.

Airman Third Class Joseph Klenda, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin B. Klenda Sr., Marion, is being assigned to Altus AFB, Oklahoma, for training as a plumbing specialist. He recently completed United States Air Force basic military training at Lackland AFB, Texas.
Frank Giesbrecht, Marion, received $50 in Wednesday’s Cash Day drawing. Mrs. Vera Province, Marion, missed $5, Mrs. Raymond Weber, Elmdale, received $15, Herbert D. Regier, Peabody, received $5, and Mrs. Harold Johnson, Marion, received $10.
