Another downtown building modernization in progress is at the Wheeler and Westerhaus law offices. Ralph Kreutziger of Jost Construction Company is pictured using an air hammer on one of the two stone steps that will be replaced by a modern walk-in.

Eight Marion High School students and their principal left by special train Wednesday afternoon for the annual education trip to the east. Students on the trip are Shirley Bredemeier, Donna Hanschu, Anita Schlehuber, Karen Higgins, JoAnn Magee, Chris Hauser, Gary Alexander, and Tom Tucker. Kenneth Hartman, principal, accompanied them.

Veterans of World War I will be meeting in Marion a week from Friday to organize a “Marion County Barracks, according to J.L. Wikus of Topeka.

A layette shower honoring Mrs. Robert Jirak was held April 7 at the Edson Childs home. Hostesses were Mrs. Childs, Mrs. Mark Childs, Mrs. Ronald Herbel, and Mrs. Tom Shirley.

The cellar-filling activity at the Case building where Duckwall’s variety store has started a major expansion is attracting a large number of “sidewalk superintendents.” these days. A picture on the front page shows the west half of the building front with a Paul Loewen dump truck getting rid of one of many loads of dirt to make the fill. Work upstairs also is proceeding, in spite of the noisy distraction.
