Marion’s entry won first prize of $500 Saturday at the Bicentennial Fair at Midstate Mall in Salina.

It was a mural-type display depicting stone buildings and typical Marion scenes — including a view down Main St. It also contained a large replica of the Marion seal, “Best Place I’ve Seen.”

The 32-foot by 8-foot display was painted by Mr. and Mrs. Les Byer on corrugated board donated by Love Box Co. of Wichita.

In spite of strong winds, crashing whitecaps, and a scorching sun, the fifth annual Marion Lake Fishing Derby was a success. The event was sponsored by Marion Lake Association and participating Marion and Hillsboro merchants.

City of Marion workers have been busy installing lights alongside a hard surfaced runway at Marion Municipal Airport.

Eugene Just and son, Rick, 17, are pictured shearing sheep for a neighbor who brought them to the Just farm half a mile south of Aulne. Just is a three-time winner in sheep shearing at Kansas State Fair at Hutchinson.

This issue contains a number of stories concerning Aulne and surrounding area. A personality profile features 89-year-old John Hett, telling stories of the past and his family.

Earl L. Kreuter, retired Marion banker and former city commissioner, died Monday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka.
