The Old Settlers’ Parade on October 3, this year promises to be one of the best yet, with many registrations of intent to enter already recorded by parade chairman Jerry Higgins.
A blown tire on a large semi-trailer truck carrying a full load of wild animals, threw the vehicle into the ditch and created a good deal of excitement in Peabody early Friday morning. Fortunately, none of the animals escaped from the trailer. In the truck was a cheetah, nine leopards, a black panther, a zebra and nine Siberian wolfhounds. They belonged to a circus unit en route to Hutchinson from Topeka for appearances at the state fair.
The Rt. Rev. John M. Sklenar, 41 years pastor of St. John’s parish at Pilsen, died early Thursday morning at St. Luke Hospital, where he had made his home since August 1954.
D.B. Jantz, E.W. Frickey, and James Wilson have been notified that they have been awarded scholarships by the National Science Foundation. Wilson and Frickey have been awarded scholarship in mathematics, while Jantz has received his scholarship in physics. They will attend classes each Saturday morning from Sept. 27 to May 10, 1959, at Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia.
Lloyd Edward Davies, who has been in service the past two years, was released the first part of August. He visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Davies and left last week for Emporia where he will enroll at KSTC.
