Kenneth Rigler was installed as commissioner of utilities for the City of Marion Monday at the regular meeting of the city commission.

The Elgin Hotel, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lundgren, is just completing the remodeling of all the rooms on the third floor. The rooms have been painted and papered, and new hot water lines have been installed. Also, an entire new hot water system has been installed along with a new boiler and steam heating plant.

Top honors in this year’s elementary spelling bee Wednesday went to Tom Poppe of Lincolnville who successfully spelled “chrysanthemum.” Runner-up was Francine Ratzlaff of Goessel. Third went to Mary Jo Stika of Pilsen and Raymon Mayginnes of Marion was fourth.

Mrs. Ruth Greenemeyer of Marion received $100 in this week’s Cash Days drawing. Juliann Beisel of Marion received $10, Mrs. Albert Makovec, Lost Springs, missed $5, John Haas, Lincolnville, received $20, and Mrs. Laura Just, Marion, received $10.

Lyle Sanders, Marion policeman, this week announced that he would be a candidate for the office of sheriff of Marion County on the Republican ticket, subject to the August primary.
