Former Marion resident, W.R. (Curly) Wolfinbarger, Major General USAF retired, of Winter Haven, Florida, will be the featured speaker at Old Settlers Day in Marion Thursday, Oct. 1.

Another convenience for Marion shoppers was put into service this week with the opening of the free public parking lot on N. Fifth St. just north of Schroeder Produce and the Main Street bridge. This is the first of several such lots planned for the downtown business area.

Student enrollment in Marion city schools continued the steady increase noted during the past several years, as anticipated. The total enrolled the first day of school is 715 students, some 16 over the same time last year.

C.J. Ross, clerk of the district court for the past nine years, last week resigned from his position. Mrs. Rex (Geraldine) Seibel was appointed by Judge Walter E. Hembrow to fill the unexpired term.

Mrs. Flora McKibbin of Marion was notified this week that she has won a new Norge refrigerator in a “Heart’s Desire” sweepstakes sponsored by the Staley Manufacturing Co. Hers was one of 270 winners selected in the contest that was for Sta-Flo Starch and Sta-Puf fabric softener.
