Mayor Ira Newcomer and Finance Commissioner Earl Kreuter and their wives will attend the annual City Convention at the Lassen Hotel in Wichita Monday. At the banquet, the men will each receive a 10-year pin presented by the League of Kansas Municipalities.

Although Margene Savage, Miss Kansas, failed to reach the big title in the Miss America contest, she says it was a wonderful experience. Margene was eliminated in the last round before the 10 semifinalists were selected.

Marion is proud of her new sewer plant, water plant, and storage facilities. We turned down federal help. Our city government could do the job, so didn’t look for a handout. Had they accepted federal aid it would have cost at least double. So we stuck to the old-fashioned idea of keeping control right here at home.

Two Marion young men, Rocky Hett and Tim Williams, returned home Thursday after six months tour of duty with the Army. Both have been stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and both won the special “Graduate with Honor” certificates reserved for the top ten percent of the class.
