At the Marion Athletic Association meeting Tuesday evening, W.M. (Bud) Pierce was elected president, O.W. (Gus) Newlon was named vice president; and Ed McClain was re-elected secretary-treasurer.

Memorial services were held in Peabody Sunday for 7-year-old Brice Herbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Herbert, and Marion County’s first polio fatality this year.

A total of $21 in prizes was awarded to students in the Marion school system, who were winners of the Case & Son annual Fire Prevention essay contest. Mary Hannaford won $7 as first prize in high school. Second prize of $5 went to Sarabel Wolf. Ted Heath, winner of third prize, received $2.50. Eighth grade winner was Rowena Olsen. Billie Jean Herbert won in the 7th grade and Maurita Starkey took top honors for the 6th grade. All grade winners were awarded $2 each.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gutsch of Lincolnville announce the engagement of their daughter, Juanita, to Will Helmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Helmer Sr. of Marion. The wedding date has not been set.

A corn picking party was held at LeRoy Brunner’s farm Wednesday. Three pickers, five tractors, seven trailers, two pickup trucks, one elevator and eight men worked the 30 acres. Those participating were Charles and Edward Stenzel, Herb, Richard and Ervin Janzen, G.F. Beisel, Ezra Schimpf, and David Bernhardt.
