The Marion school board on Monday accepted the lowest in three groups of bids and approved plans which will start construction on a new gymnasium and vocational agricultural building within 30 days. Successful bidder was Martin K. EBay Construction Co., Inc., of Wichita.

Most recent improvements at the Marion County Park and Lake were two new bathhouses. They face the beach and each is of ample size to handle a good many swimmers at the lake this summer.

Two new straw hats were awarded this week to guessers who judged the number of beans in a jar at the Penney’s and Jackson stores. David Krispense won the hat at Penney’s guessing 2,300 on a jar containing 2,288 beans. Vera Remmers guessed 2,018, two short of the 2,020 in the jar at Jackson’s

The engagement of Rosalie Myers Price to Edwin Manville Wheeler, both of Washburn College, Topeka, is announced this week. They plan a late summer wedding.

Considerable costly damage resulted from the hail, rain and windstorm weather conditions that occurred near Marion Tuesday evening. The hardest hit area in Marion County was around the Youngtown area. The farm homes of Rufus Bateman, Harold Bowers, Boyd Higgins and others suffered severe damage to both crops and buildings.
