Marion County residents could buy liquor legally for the first time Tuesday. The first legal sales were from the approved liquor store of Kenneth Earl Robinson in Florence.

A tragic highway accident last Thursday afternoon was the cause of the death of James Edward Coffin. The familiar figure on Marion’s streets was riding his bicycle north on U.S.-77 east of Marion when he turned into a car attempting to pass him.

One of the most outstanding collections of its kind in the state is the button collection of Mrs. Fred Muck. Approximately 75,000 buttons, all different, make up this continually growing collection. Famous people including “Wrong Way” Corrigan, Lou Gehrig, Shirley Temple, Glenn Cunningham have sent many of the buttons to her, to name just a few.

H.W. Sly, who suffered painful and disabling leg injuries as a result of his war service, is home in Marion on a pass from Winter Veterans’ Hospital in Topeka. This week he received a new automobile from Paul Seifert, local Chevrolet dealer, who delivered the vehicle for the Veteran’s Administration.

A child portrait contest, conducted by Broadstreet’s Moderne Studio, will start July 25 and run until Aug. 20.
