Brrrr! The mercury dropped to a shivering 47 Thursday morning for an unseasonal cold snap. The last few days of cool weather have been a welcome change to most people, and have brought hopes of an early frost to hay fever sufferers.

The annual Community Guild banquet will be held Sept. 6 at the city building as the first social event of the fall season. The timely “School Days” theme will be carried out in the program and decorations.

Two students from Marion are among 55 men awarded residence hall scholarships in Battenfeld Hall at the University of Kansas. They are Robert Hein and Harold Ehrlich.

A DP (displaced persons) family has arrived in Pilsen and is staying in the rectory until a permanent home is given them. A larger family is expected to arrive in the near future.

The first Marion County soapbox races were held Sunday afternoon just east of Marion. Twenty-five “hot rod” enthusiasts performed before hundreds of friends and relatives. LaVern Hoffman made the fastest time in his third race, with a time of 21 seconds and an average of 17.44 mph.
