In a decision that will bring mental health services closer to the physical health services of St, Luke Hospital, the board of directors of Marion County Hospital District 1 Thursday night approved a request from Prairie View Mental Health Center for space on the hospital grounds.

Miss Kansas, Debra Barnes of Pittsburg, and Miss Marion County, Judy Pankratz of Marion, will be on hand this Friday for the annual pageant in the Hillsboro High School auditorium. Candidates for queen of the Marion County Fair this year include Connie Thye, Connie Jost, Faith Kleinsasser, Jacquelyn Mize, and Shirley Vogt, Hillsboro; Roxanne Zerger, Helen Jackson, and Barbara Christensen, Marion; Kristine Schubert, Ramona; Linda Priddy, Lincolnville; Virginia Reid, Peabody; and Kristin Reid, Florence.

Mrs. Fred Muck reports that more money came in this past week, mostly from out of town, toward the picture project at Marion High School of restoring, re-mounting, and re-lettering all the old photographs. They then will be placed in large wing-type display panels and erected in a suitable site in either the stone administration building or the high school building.

Miss Rose Marie Loveless, who leaves August 20 for Newport, Rhode Island, to complete officers’ candidate school in the WAVES, was guest of honor at a basket dinner Aug. 13 at the Marion County Lake hall.

Marion’s beautiful new municipal swimming pool opens for use this afternoon for the balance of the summer. The new pool will delight thousands of young and older residents with its crystal-clear water, its completely modern equipment and facilities, and its attractive location and construction. Ed Frickey, Marion High School coach and faculty member, has been retained to manage the pool.

G.P. Gaede, of Gaede Sewing Machine Exchange, Newton, reports that nearly 300 women signed up for the free sewing machine at Cumpton Dry Goods store in Marion last week. He’s happy to report that Mrs. Wesley Summervill won the free sewing machine, Joyce Remmers, a sewing kit, and Mrs. Melvin May, a child’s sewing machine.

Mrs. Daniel Grubb and children left Tuesday for their new home in Venezuela, South America. Her brother, Harold Conyers, took them to New Orleans. The oil company had made arrangements for them to fly to Maracaibo, Venezuela, and from there to Lagunillas, an oil camp where they will live. There are about 500 people living there and they have their own oil company school.

Mr. and Mrs. Max Merrill, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hannaford, and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Reinke left Saturday for a vacation at Green Mountain Falls, Colorado. The grandparents are taking care of the grandchildren.
