Jack Richmond of Marion was recognized on Old Settlers Day as being the oldest present (96) and having lived in the county the longest (since 1874).

Mrs. Albert Janzen of Lodi, California, and Mrs. Vella Niederhauser Strang of Spokane, Washington, received awards for having come the farthest distance.

Mrs. Janzen originally came to Marion County in 1902 and was married in 1912, the year Old Settlers Day was started. Mrs. Strang was born here in 1891.

First string Marion Warrior lineman who will oppose the Hillsboro Trojans this Friday are Doug Bass, Gilbert Johnson, Bob Leppke, Max Miller, Wayne Ewert, Chris Hauser, Gene Schimpf, and Tom Tucker. The backfield includes Bob Olsen, Maurice Williams, Dick Hamlin, and quarterback Max Jackson.

The Marion County Lake record for big fish was broken last week by Irvin “Pappy” Gerstenkorn. He is pictured with a 33-pound shovelhead he landed, breaking the record by some 10 pounds.

Winners in the Old Settlers Day horseshoe pitching contest were Tip McFadden, Byron McCarty, Cap Rudolph, Hank Klein, and C. Anderson.

“None of the scores were worth bragging about and we hope to improve and widen the contest for next year,” chairman McCarty reported.

The 45th anniversary of the World War I Battle of the Argonne was observed at an annual reunion of Company M, 139th Infantry, in St. Joseph, Missouri.
