Through a most unusual combination of downpours this week, the lower parts of Peabody were flooded while Marion was spared, and Florence was saved by its newly constructed levee. Probably the hardest hit in Peabody was Co-Op Equity Exchange, where 18 inches of water were reported on the dock level at its feed mill.

Seaman Earl W. Winter is visiting ports in northern Europe aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Claude V. Ricketts. The ship’s crew is made up of officers and men from five allied nations: West Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States.

A new musical group pleasing teenagers in this area is a quintet calling themselves The Scoundrels. The group has played for several dances at the county lake hall. Band members are Tom Berry, Pat Costello, Jim Magee, Rod Oelschlager, and Wally Slusser.

Two station attendants at Dave Hansen’s S&S Oil received $50 awards last week from Phillips Petroleum. Rex Berry and Roland Klein were spot-checked by a Phillips “mystery motorist” and found to give complete and thorough driveway service.
