The first meeting of the board of education of the new Marion Unified School District will be July 1 in the board room of the administration building. Members of the board are Roy Hett, Larry Jost, Dorothy Magee, Bill Meyer, Ralph Popp, and Ronald Widler.
A major business change took place at Tampa this past week when Murphy Lumber Co. was sold to L.E. Havlik. The yard was operated by Francis Murphy for many years before his untimely death. It recently has been operated by Mrs. Murphy and son Tom.
Local government employees receiving length-of-service awards from the Soil Conservation and Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation departments include Robert Hoover and Kenneth Muse, 20 years each, and Hugo Hiebert and John Toevs Hillsboro; Homer Hett Marion; and Herman Meyer, Lincolnville, 10 years each.
Jack Applegate, who has been superintendent of schools at Marquette, has been hired as superintendent of Marion’s school system for the coming year. Mr. and Mrs. Applegate have three children, one in junior high and two in high school.
The unique “Miniature Caravan” that is traveling the length of the old Santa Fe Trail will visit to Marion on July 13. The day also will be “Kids Day” with many activities planned for the youngsters.
