A massive line of storms Wednesday afternoon gathered strength and intensity as it moved eastward across the state.

Hardest hit were Topeka and Manhattan, where deaths were listed at 13 and probably more, the injured in the hundreds, and damages in the millions of dollars.

In Marion County, many acres of ripe wheat, ready for harvest, were flattened by hail and severe rain. Storms that gathered and blew did not conform to a general pattern but were beneficial in spots, devastating in others.

Free coffee and cookies will be served all day Saturday at Franta Café in Lincolnville.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Franta recently purchased the former Deines Café at the west end of Main St. The café will be open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and feature regular meals, short orders, and beer.

Cadette Girl Scout Troop 61 received the highest award in cadette scouting Tuesday afternoon, Challenge Pins of the Girl Scout Promise, during a program at the American Legion hall.

Scouts honored were Marla Bingaman, Tammy Case, Cathy Costello, Marsha Cowan, Susan Hansen, Jan Herrick, Beverly Hoch, Janice Jantz, Susan Marler, Nancy Olsen, Susan Vogel, Kathy Weber, and Kathy Winter.

Friends and supporters of the summer recreation and baseball program for kids are being asked to give a little time and effort Thursday night in doing a few last-minute repair and spruce-up jobs before summer activity begins June 12.

Marion County again showed a healthy gain in population over last year, with the cities of Hillsboro, Peabody, Marion, Goessel and Florence accounting for most of the gain.

Mary Konarik, water safety instructor and coordinator of Red Cross swimming instruction at Marion Municipal Pool, has announced this list of helpers: Roma Roebke, water safety instructor; Linda Bauman, Helen Jackson, Judy Pankratz, Patty Plenert, Jackie Thomas, and Susan Yeagley, instructor aides; and Kaye Applegate, Kerry Domke, and Linda Oldham, helpers.
