State highway officials were in Marion on Monday to advise officials of major improvements planned for US-56. Improvements will be along the present highway route, without major location change.

Marion American Legion junior baseball team won its first game this season Sunday by defeating Herington 7-2. Mark Klenda pitched a 4-hit game for Marion and struck out six.

After an unusually dry spring and winter, Marion County farmers were finally ready to start harvesting a wheat crop that had been doubtful several times.

Dan Schlotthauer brought in the first load of wheat Wednesday to the Co-Op Grain and Supply elevator in Marion. It tested 58 pounds and 17% moisture.

Douglas Kelsey, son of Mr. and Ms. Donald Kelsey, who will be in eighth grade this fall, won the state championship in the 75-yard dash Saturday at the Junior Olympics held in Lawrence. He also placed fourth in the high jump.

Abe Mohn of Marion received $50 at this week’s Cash Days drawing. Mrs. Vern Armantrout, Marion, missed $45; Lee Winkley, Marion, received $5; Ellis Craney, Peabody, missed $10; and Mrs. Howard Mollnow, Marion, missed $5.
