Several from the county attended a committee hearing in Washington, D.C. last week to take part in hearings being held before the congressional subcommittee on flood control relative to the recommendation by the Army Corps of Engineers to construct a number of large dams along the Neosho and Cottonwood rivers.

Dwight Waddell, Emporia, and Jack Larkin, Florence, were elected last week as co-captains of the 1950 track teams at Kansas Teachers College, Emporia.

Members of the Marion High School senior class enjoyed a weekend trip to Lake Taneycomo at Branson, Mo., under the sponsorship of D.B. Jantz, The trip took them through the Ozarks, Eureka Springs, and en route home stopped at Grand Lake in northeast Oklahoma.

One of Marion’s established business houses changed hands Sunday when Mrs. Wayne Johnson purchased the Del Mar Café, on North Third Street, from Mrs. Clara Dody.

The Youngtown area, east of Marion, got a taste of last Friday night’s widespread windstorms. Most serious damage was done at the Youngtown church where the building was moved half off its foundation and damaged beyond repair. Complete rebuilding will be required.

All children of the community from four to 14 years of age are invited to take advantage of the educational and recreational opportunity of the Union 1949 Vacation Bible School. The school will be held in the Methodist church beginning May 31 at 9 a.m.
