Old Settlers’ Day was one of the finest ever. Perfect weather, fine parade, interesting program, games, fireworks and a ball game made the event complete. The most universal sentiment expressed by the hundreds, yes thousands, of persons who enjoyed Old Settlers’ Day in Marion last Thursday, was that it was one of the best yet.
The National Baseball Congress, Wichita, today announced the appointment of the first 27 commissioners who will supervise a minimum of 400 district tournaments in 1949. Among those 27 is Wilbur Melcher, Marion, who handled the tournament here last season.
Carolyn Merrill celebrated her 11th birthday with a skating party Tuesday evening at the rink. Guests included Ann Davies, Carol Miser, Judy Thatch, Nila Hoopes, Janis Hayward, Barbara McDaris, Janet Priddle, Anita Kline, Carol Jean Allen, Patricia DeWitt, Alda Ratts, Leon Lais, Laurence Griggs, Bob Hiebert, Johnny Williams, Joe Dvorak, Johnny Waner, Jerry Richards, Paul Roberts, Johnny Tuell, and Jerry Ratts.
Mrs. E.D. Longhofer is president of the local VFW Auxiliary, which was organized October 10, 1946, when 13 members were given the obligation.
The first shipment of grass cattle from Oursler was seven carloads on Monday of last week, loaded out by McLinden. Another seven carloads were loaded out this last Saturday.
