In a tense, action-filled tragic half-hour Sunday noon, two violent deaths occurred in Florence. One was the murder of Dave Break, 70, the town’s popular marshal. The other the suicide of the man who did the killing, Fred Stanley, 59.

Emory Hawbecker, genial proprietor of the Cubby Hole Café, has been confined to his bed for the past few days. His illness is not considered serious, but just a chance for him to take a needed rest. He expects to be back behind the counter at the Cubby Hole on Monday.

Jack Scott’s Marion Marble and Granite Works is one of the oldest industries in Marion. Jack came to Marion as a boy in 1906 and helped build the courthouse. He worked for F.R. Frobenius as a stone mason and after three years bought out the business. He has operated it in the same location since that time.

Loaded into two trucks and one automobile Bill DuVall, Scotty Gound, Clive Jarvis, Bill Ward, Floyd Padgett, Leslie Powell, Swede Williams, Jess Coons, Doc McCandless, Charles Winkley, and Ray Conyers are on their way to the green forests of Colorado and Wyoming looking for deer.
