Early arrivals for Thursday’s Old Settlers Day were busy Wednesday making the rounds of homes, renewing old acquaintances, and remarking on how fine Marion and Central Kansas looks this year. From all indications it is going to be a grand affair. Marion, and all her residents, bid everyone welcome.

Three business fronts, Merrill’s Cleaners, Boyer Jewelry store, and Homer Reinke’s building have been improved with the addition of new signs, painted exteriors, and some remodeling.

Ronald Ewert, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ewert, who live three miles south and one east of Hillsboro, is the first infantile paralysis case reported in Marion County this season, according to Dr. O.C. McCandless.

Warren Hayen, Roger Hannaford, and Harold Bowers have enrolled at Bethany College, Lindsborg, for the school year.

Two Durham girls, Augusta Duke and Muriel Christiansen, are entered in the “Kansas Rodeo Queen” contest to be part of the Wichita Jaycee Rodeo which opens Sept. 14 and continues through Sept. 17 at Lawrence Stadium.

Population figures recently released by the Kansas State Board of Agriculture show that Marion County has 17,203 inhabitants. Population of the various towns in the county is as follows: Marion 2,233; Hillsboro 2,096; Peabody 1,397; Florence, 1,055; Burns 304; Durham 240; Lehigh 236; Lincolnville 231; Tampa 226; Lost Springs 210; and Ramona 184.
