Corporal Merlin Helback, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, was killed in action in Korea October 10 in the bitter campaign for possession of “Heartbreak Ridge.” Cpl. Helback was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Helback and had left the States for Korea in April of this year. He is survived by his parents and a sister, Mrs. Alfred Sondergard of Ramona.
According to street commissioner Philip Stenzel, all damaged sidewalk and pavement at the Mud Creek Bridge on Main Street is being excavated by Riddle Quarries and will be replaced by city crews with Bob Dixon doing the concrete work.
Marion Radio and Appliance, a new firm featuring radio and appliance sales and repair, will be open for business this Saturday in the Case building at the former Henry Shoe Store. Managers of the business will be Mr. and Mrs. Wm. G. Hiebert, Hillsboro. Wilbur E. Janzen, Hillsboro, is co-owner of the business.
Mrs. Norma Hannaford has bought out the Gardner interest in the Hannaford and Gardner abstracting firm. The name and the staff will remain the same, Mrs. Hannaford said.
Five high school students top this year’s first honor roll at Marion High School and four of the five are girls. Jessie Jewett and Carol Schlehuber each had four A’s and one B; Diana Herbert, Nancy Broadstreet, and John Williams each had four A’s.
Next to the top, with three A’s and either one or two B’s were Pat Heerey, Sarabel Wolf, Shirley Tiemeier, Pat Kruse, Marilyn Reh, and Janet Priddle.
Since teachers are away attending the state teachers’ meeting, 30 Boy Scouts and six adult leaders left Wednesday on a fall outing to Nebraska. They will stay one night at Kiwanis Youth Camp on Lake Shawnee near Topeka and three nights at Boys’ Town near Omaha. They will attend the Nebraska-Kansas football game at Lincoln Saturday afternoon, and return to Marion on Sunday.
