Petitions are being circulated in Marion this week asking the city council to take necessary steps to put the question of issuing bonds for construction of a municipal swimming pool on a special ballot at the November election.

Plans are nearly complete and prospects look good for one of the finest Old Settlers Days in the history of the yearly event.

The day will feature a parade led by J.D. Ferrell, outstanding speakers, and other forms of entertainment including a dog platoon from Fort Riley.

Graveside services were Sept. 17 for Harry K. Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Rogers, one of the community’s pioneer families.

He was intensely interested in dramatics. Among his many projects was managing an early-day picture show in the old Auditorium.

In later days, he developed a unique program for making children conscious of fire hazards and preventive measures, putting on shows in schools throughout the states using the name Smoky, the Fire Clown.

Little Pam Vinduska, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Vinduska of Marion, is shown as she drew the name of Mrs. Homer Hett out of the hat to win $50 in frozen foods.

The drawing was the conclusion of a weeklong display of Frigidaire appliances by Cook TV at Wingerd’s IGA.
