Pictured on the front page Harry Embree of Peabody and W.S. McKibbin and Charley Ehrlich of Marion — the entire roster of living Spanish-American War veterans in Marion County who saw service in the Philippine Islands just before the turn of the century. The three get together at least once a month for a regular meeting of the VFW.
Governor Frank Carlson, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, was in Marion visiting friends and making new contacts Saturday morning. He went on to Hillsboro for lunch.
Forty-three Marion High School students made the first six weeks’ honor roll.
Sarabel Wolf took top honors for the entire school with a perfect record of five A’s. She is a member of the junior class.
Those with four A’s were freshman Marilyn Reh; sophomores Diana Herbert and Shirley Tiemeier; juniors Carol Schlehuber and Alice Ward; and no seniors.
The attractive farm home of Mr. and Mrs. George Thye east of Marion was destroyed Friday afternoon by a fire that originated with a leaky kerosene stove.
Twenty-nine students from Marion County are among 5,911 enrolled this fall at Kansas State College in Manhattan. Those from Marion are Otis Ray Griggs, Mary Louise Heath, Bettye Luella Holmes, Paul Mohn, Robert G. Reinke, Clarence M. Stegeman, Mahlon F. Wheeler, and Betty Louise Williams.
