MHS debate season a success

Staff writer

Marion High School debaters completed a successful 2008-09 season this January, coach Mary Griffith said.

Highlights included a pair of third-place finishes. The team participated in seven tournaments. One other was canceled because of snow.

The season began in July, when debaters learned the topic for the season — whether the U.S. government should substantially increase alternative energy incentives.

Debaters studied the topic intensively, crafting arguments both in favor and opposed to the proposal. This is needed because debaters don’t know before a match whether they will be arguing for or against the proposal, Griffith said.

Marion High School debaters were Levi Anderson, Niklas Bronnert, Cody DiLoreto, Chris Guetersloh, Sarah Guetersloh, Taylor Harms, Brandon Meierhoff, Beth Nesser, E.J. Obermeyer, Adam Palic, and Andy Shipman.

“It takes a special student to stay with this program. I am looking forward to another successful season next year,” Griffith said.
