MHS riding a coaching carousel

Marion High School is entering a new era in its athletics.
Jason Hett stepped down Monday as athletic director.
His resignation then ushered in Jack Schneider’s tenure as AD and football coach, which also was announced at Monday’s school board meeting.
Superintendent Justin Wasmuth could not provide specifics for why Hett stepped down.
“I just know that the opportunity presented to move on from the AD position and be back in the classroom,” he said.
After 14-combined years as an athletic director at the Central Christian School in Hutchinson, and Marion, Hett said it was “the right time for me to step down.”
A physical education teaching position at MHS opened, and Hett decided to pursue that so he could spend more time with his family.
He still will coach the cross-country, and girls’ basketball teams, according to Wasmuth.
“I’m excited for this next chapter,” Hett said.
Schneider graduated from MHS in 2018 and played football for the Warriors before attending Emporia State University and graduating there in 2022. He was a wide receiver for the Hornets in 2018, his redshirt season, and 2019.
Schneider was one of seven candidates for the coaching job, Wasmuth said. Staff cut the list down to two after preliminary research and interviews.
Schneider succeeds Shaun Craft, who resigned to move and get married. Craft is now the AD at Little River.
Wasmuth said Schneider’s confidence and maturity for his age led to his hiring.
“He has the understanding of what he’s coming into since he’s from here,” Wasmuth said, “(and) really just having a plan coming in as both an educator and as a coach.”
He also will teach weight lifting at Marion.
Before being hired here, Schneider was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Oxford High School the last four seasons.
During his time there, the Wildcats amassed a 23-14 record and notched back-to-back seven-win seasons in 2024 (7-3) and 2025 (7-2). During those seasons, Schneider helped them to second- and first-place finishes in the South Central Border District of Class 1A eight-man football.
Along with changes to the athletic director and football coaching positions, a decision has been made regarding MHS boys’ basketball coach Kevin Dasenbrock.
After school board members tied 3-3 on whether to keep Dasenbrock, a 5-1 vote at Monday’s board of education meeting means he will coach the Warriors this winter.
Dasenbrock also will coach the middle school football team in the fall, according to Wasmuth.
Keri Collett also is no longer Marion’s volleyball coach. Wasmuth said that Kayley Davis has been hired for the upcoming season.
