MHS scholars' bowl team defends HOA title

Staff writer

Marion High School scholars’ bowl teams dominated competition last week to win Heart of America League titles at Trinity Catholic in Hutchinson.

Coach Topher Rome said both varsity and junior varsity successfully defended titles they earned last year.

“The HOA is one of the toughest leagues in the state when it comes to scholars’ bowl,” Rome said. “Winning back-to-back titles is a testament to just how bright, committed, and well-rounded the students in our scholars’ bowl program really are.”

Varsity went 7-2 in round robin play, defeating Trinity Catholic in a head-to-head tiebreaker to win. JV won outright going 8-1.

With 270 points, team captain Collin Williams was top scorer for the varsity, followed by Kyle Pierce with 160 points. Aidan Cairns, Shonda Ratzloff, Larry Zieammermann, and Madison Miller also fired off answers to help earn the title.

JV team captain Hap Waddell earned 325 points, followed by Luisa Junqueira with 130 points. Marcel Skudlarski, Drew Helmer, Kimmie Duncan, and Cassie Meyer also contributed championship solutions.
