Mick Summervill

Mickey “Mick” W. Summervill, 76, passed away Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family after a four-year battle with cancer.

Mick was born Aug. 15, 1941, to Wesley Summervill and Mildred (Bredemeier) Summervill in Hillsboro, Kansas. He graduated from Marion High School with the class of 1959 and received his Bachelor’s of Education degree from Emporia State University. He met Marjorie “Marge” Gardner there and they married on June 14, 1964. He taught in Kansas City, Kansas, for several years before returning to the family farm after his father passed. Mick and Marge were blessed with three children, Robin, Tim, and Kay Lynn.

Mick was a member and deacon of Marion Christian Church and served on the church board. He was always active in his community, serving on the local school board, county soil conservation board, and the Co-op board. He was a charter member of Cottonwood Valley Flying Farmers Association and made many friends from all over the state.

Mick loved his family, friends, and neighbors, and always enjoyed visiting with them, playing pinochle together, and he truly enjoyed getting a laugh or smile with his affectionate teasing. He loved to fly, scuba dive, snow ski, and most of all farm. Farming was a part of him until the very last days. His favorite place to be was in the tractor and he was the happiest when he was working. He enjoyed traveling from Alaska to Hawaii and went on several cruises in the Caribbean, but when it came time to come home he couldn’t get there fast enough. Mick worked in Colorado for several summers for the U.S. Forest Service and enjoyed telling of his adventures. He loved his wife and his family and had great pride in his three children, their spouses, and eight grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Wesley and Mildred Summervill, and his brother, Marion Summervill.
