Missing patient found 4 miles away

Staff writer

A Westview Manor resident who wandered away from the facility was found early Sunday at Nighthawk Rd. near 110th Rd., four miles from Westview.

The unidentified man was found at 6 a.m. when a passerby reported seeing a man lying in a ditch.

Ambulances and police responded, but the man declined medical transport and was returned to Westview. How he got to the location remains unconfirmed.

Monitored police transmissions do not indicate that he had been reported missing and that there was no indication of his age or when he wandered away.

Westview declined to comment on the matter, citing restrictions under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

The matter remains under investigation by Westview, Peabody police chief Bruce Burke said Monday. However, no scanner report by the facility could be found notifying police of the disappearance.

Similar incidents with residents who wandered away from the facility occurred in 2013 and 2016.

In 2013 a resident who was allowed to sign himself out went missing for more than a day and was found in a small town southwest of Tulsa.

In 2016 a woman left the facility after a smoke break but only made it a few blocks before being picked up by Burke and returned to Westview.
