MMS basketball teams improving each game

In games against Lindsborg and Sterling this past week, each Marion Middle School girls’ basketball team won at least one game.

The A- and B-teams split two games each, while the C-team won its only game.

Against Sterling Jan. 5, only the A- and B-teams played and both came away with victories.

The B-team was lead by Balee Shiplet and Kelli Hess who each scored eight points in a 33-8 win. Ericka Herzet chipped in with five points.

The A-team pulled out a squeaker, 29-28.

Katey Ehrlich had a team-high 13 points, and Briana Hall 12.

The Wildcats took on Lindsborg Thursday at home. The A- and B-team lost while the C-team improved to 3-4 with a victory.

The A-Wildcats (3-6) fought hard, but fell, 32-27.

Erin Meierhoff had six points and four steals, while Hall had five points and nine rebounds.

The B-team (5-4) played another close game, but this time was on the losing end, 28-26.

Hess had nine points and eight steals in the loss, while Monica Spachek chipped in six points and Elizabeth Goentzel had five.

Spachek was on fire in the C-game with a team-high 15 points.

Sarah Eurit had three points and nine rebounds, and Cassandra McPhail had two points.

The Wildcat girls will not be in action until Jan. 22 when they play host to Reno Valley.

It was a tough night at Lindsborg for MMS boys’ basketball team.

The A- and C-teams fell to the Vikings, however the B-team improved to 7-2.

Jordan Hett scored seven points and Patrick McCarty added four, but the A-team lost, 38-19.

Trailing 14-4 after the first quarter, the Wildcats never mounted a comeback.

“We seem to be in a scoring slump right now,” said head coach Kelly Robson. “We just can’t seem to put the ball in the basket.”

It was the fourth loss in a row for the team after starting out 5-0.

Trever Kinnersley’s 14 points and staunch team defense led the B-team to a 37-6 victory.

The Wildcats held the Vikings scoreless in the first half, and the starters were pulled after MMS led 37-2 after three quarters.

“We completely dominated the game in all areas,” Robson said.

Caleb Williams added eight points for Marion in the victory.

The C-team (4-2) tried to mount a fourth-quarter comeback, giving up just one point in the final frame, but still lost, 21-15.

Colton Jeffrey led MMS with five points, but a scoreless third quarter did-in MMS.

“The effort is there, but we have trouble scoring,” Robson said.

MMS will play Jan. 22 at Reno Valley.
