MMS boys, girls play at Halstead

Marion Middle School basketball teams went 1-5 this past week at Halstead.

The boys’ C-team claimed a 27-25 victory, while the A- and B-teams lost.

Spencer Fugitt was in double-figures with 11 points, and Luke Steele had four, as the C-Wildcats moved to 3-1 on the season.

MMS jumped ahead 10-3 at the end of the first quarter, but the Dragons used a 14-point second quarter to lead 17-12 at the half.

A strong third quarter for MMS closed the gap, and the Wildcats outscored HMS 8-4 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.

“Everyone contributed in a positive fashion in the game,” said coach Kelly Robson.

The B-game went into overtime with the two teams tied at 24.

Marion only could muster a free throw, and Halstead’s two points were enough for a 26-25 victory.

Trevor Kinnersley had a team-high 12 points, and Zach Robson scored eight, but the Wildcats fell to 5-2.

They led 12-10 at halftime and 16-12 after three, but the Dragons fought back with a 12-point fourth quarter, equaling their total for the first three.

Robson was disappointed with the loss, but happy with how his team played.

“The effort was there all night for this group,” he said.

A 22-6 first quarter for the Halstead A-team set the tone for the rest of the game.

“The home team hardly missed a shot in the first quarter and never really was challenged,” Robson said.

HMS ended the game with a 57-34 victory.

Jacob Harper had 13 points and Ethan Hett scored eight for the 5-2 Wildcats.

The girls’ teams lost all three games.

The A-team dropped to 4-3 overall with a 38-22 loss.

Corey Shields was high-scorer and rebounder with eight points and 13 rebounds.

Balee Shiplet had six points, Kelli Hess four and five steals, and Monica Spachek added four points.

The B-team (2-5) lost 37-28 to the Dragons.

Katey Ehrlich was in double-figures with 13 points and added three steals.

Erin Meierhoff had six points, Briana Hall four, Montana Percell three, and Megan Richmond two.

The C-team is now 2-4 on the season with a 34-11 loss.

Five Wildcats got on the board, led by Elizabeth Goentzel’s four points.

Spachek, Cassandra McPhail, and Cara Martin each had two points, and Sara Eurit added a free throw.

The team’s game scheduled for this past Thursday was postponed because of inclement weather.

MMS will hit the court against Jan. 5 for a home match-up with Sterling.
