More fishing supplies may come to lake

Staff writer

With one local bait shop closed, county lake visitors are having enough trouble finding fishing supplies that the county might begin stocking more items at the lake office.

Twila Legg, co-owner of Coyote Crossing Bait and Ammo shop in Marion said her business might reopen later this summer.

Carlsons’ grocery store sells earthworms, a small selection of fishing supplies, and occasionally gets minnows.

In the meantime, lake coordinator Isaac Hett told county commissioners Monday campers who drive RVs from Wichita have to drive their RVs into town to get fishing supplies.

He and commissioners discussed the possibility of stocking a larger supply of bait and fishing supplies.

The lake already has a bait vending machine, but it no longer gives change. It also has a modest supply of bait and fishing tackle inside the office.

“I think the benefit you bring to the people who are out there is worth it,” Hett said.

Hett said he wanted to stock basic fishing items and thought the lake should have drinking water and a small selection of sodas.

Commissioner Dianne Novak said she did not want the county to compete with local businesses, especially since times are tough. Commissioners generally agreed.

They instructed Hett to check into getting supplies to take care of campers and fishermen for the time being, and to check to see whether the cost of repairing the vending machine would make it feasible.
