Motorist hit while standing by car on K-15

Staff writer

An Andover woman hit by a car Sunday morning while standing next to a vehicle on K-15 was rushed to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol, Yueyang Jiang, 24, was standing next to a Toyota Corolla stopped in the southbound lane at 6:47 a.m. She was hit by a southbound 2009 Honda Accord driven by Jennifer A. Kirkpatrick, 47, Chapman.

Lt. Eric Rust wrote that Jiang was thrown across the road and landed on the east shoulder.

The Highway Patrol was requested because the nearest deputy was 33 miles away at Centre High School.

A Hillsboro police officer volunteered to respond as well and was among the first on the scene. Hillsboro ambulance also responded.

A helicopter ambulance initially was called but was canceled by an ambulance supervisor who arrived from Marion. Hillsboro ambulance took Jiang to Wesley.

Technical trooper Ben Gardner said the patrol didn’t yet know why the car was stopped in the southbound driving lane.

“We’re still trying to figure out why she was standing next to a car,” trooper Ben Gardner said. “It remains under investigation.”

Gardner said the stopped vehicle was functional and drivable, but troopers had it towed because no one was there to claim it.
