New vaccines required
State regulations require two new vaccines for school-age children enrolling for the 2019-2020 school year.
Students entering kindergarten and first grade need two doses of hepatitis A vaccine.
Students entering grade 7 need one dose of meningococcal ACWY vaccine.
Students entering 11th grade need one dose of meningococcal ACWY vaccine if they were not vaccinated prior to their 16th birthday. They will need two doses if their first dose was before their 16th birthday.
Meningococcal ACWY vaccine protects against meningitis and bloodstream infection caused by meningococcal disease. About 1 in 10 people who get the disease dies, and survivors may lose their arms or legs, become deaf, have problems with the nervous system, become developmentally disable, or have seizure or strokes.
Hepatitis A vaccine protects against a virus that can cause fever, tiredness, poor appetite, vomiting, stomach pain and sometimes jaundice. A severe illness may last several months or in rare cases cause liver failure and death from infection.
