Volunteers are needed April 16, 17, and 18 to help build a new home for U.S. Army Sgt. Ryan Newell and his family at 1001 Tanglewood Lane, Marion.

Homes for Our Troops’ build brigade needs professional, skilled volunteers to construct an exterior shell. By the end of the third day, the goal is to have the shell of the home in place with interior walls framed, windows installed, doors hung, shingles on the roof, and siding installed.

The house will be a weather-tight shell. Interior work then will begin for the specially adapted home for the Newell family.

Non-construction, community volunteers also are needed to provide water, coolers, and ice; to bring baked goods, paper towels, hand sanitizer, trash bags, coffee, hot chocolate, snacks, paper plates, and utensils; and to watch the progress.

There need to be 50 to 75 people each day.

The Iraqi war veteran was wounded two years ago, causing him to lose both legs. His family currently lives in a two-story house in Marion, making it difficult for him to maneuver in a wheelchair or with his prosthetic legs.

The Homes for Our Troops organization is spearheading efforts to give the Newells a new home constructed by volunteer contractors and builders.
