Newspaper honored as
‘Media and Democracy Hero’
The Media and Democracy Project, a non-partisan organization based in New York City, has named Marion County Record its “Local Journalism Brightspot” and “Media and Democracy Hero.”
“The Marion County Record is a beacon of the free press and First Amendment,” the group wrote in announcing the honors last week. “We write to thank you for your ceaseless commitment to journalism and American democracy. We were horrified to learn of the treatment of your news organization and your essential small staff.”
The group included a donation to the Kansas Newspaper Foundation and sent the Record’s staff condolences from the group’s entire staff on the death of associate publisher Joan Meyer.
