No decisions revealed from city executive sessions

Council spends more than an hour in executive sessions

Staff writer

The majority of the Marion City Council meeting Monday was executive sessions.

First the council entered into three executive sessions for personnel for a total of 65 minutes, part of the time with just city administrator David Mayfield until city attorney Dan Baldwin arrived halfway through the second session.

When the council meeting reconvened, there was no action taken as a result of the executive sessions.

Later in the meeting, Baldwin asked for a 10-minute executive session for attorney-client privilege with Mayfield and the council. There were no decisions from that session.

In other business:

  • Shirley Jo Hett, representing Marion County Substance Abuse Council, presented a $1,500 check to the council and Marion Police Department for new in-car cameras. Councilman Gene Winkler also presented a check for $750 from Marion Kiwanis Club for cameras.
  • Economic development director Doug Kjellin reported he had attended several meetings to discuss a downtown youth center for middle school and high school students.
  • Mayfield reported that Butler Community College had withdrawn its request for funds to repair the roof at the former Bown Corby School.
  • Jan Helmer was re-appointed to serve another four years on Marion/Florence Recreation Commission. Winkler and councilor Stacey Collett voted against.
  • Three transfers were made to the city’s bond and interest fund. They were $3,826 from the electric fund, $6,804 from the water fund, and $75,017 from the general fund.
  • Boy Scouts from Troop 102 and Cub Scouts from Pack 102 thanked the council for allowing them to sell fireworks during the July 4th holiday. Money from the fund-raiser will be used to purchase winter camping tents and complete work on a trailer. The boys also are looking for ideas for community projects.
  • Water plant operator Marty Fredrickson reported the burn-out of the water disinfection system has been completed.
  • The next commission meeting is at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 25 in the city building.
