Forest Poulin’s days of trying to hit targets with a stone for a prize started when he was a child, when his stepfather would bring a flagpole to work in southern Florida and open the offer to all comers.

“Anybody that wanted to take a chance at getting closest to the pin or flagpole would win $25, so that’s the proposition,” he said.

Those memories were fresh in his mind when he saw a tree at his house in Peabody with a hook lodged in it. Poulin thought it made the perfect location for a target in a stone-throwing competition.

Poulin’s target in this case became a beehive-shaped glass jar, which he hung from the tree, and he set out to find a prize and people willing to take up his challenge.

Now with a $25 savings bond to be awarded to the winner, Poulin is promoting his case to anyone who will listen in hope of finding some willing challengers for his Jan. 18 competition. He plans to have the competition on his front yard in the 600 block of Chestnut St. in Peabody.
