Experienced, physical, and fast are words that can be used to describe the 2012 Peabody-Burns High School football team. With returning players at many of the offensive and key defensive positions, the squad has time for refining instead of learning the system.
Familiar faces on both sides of the ball and on the sideline will provide continuity in a schedule that is new to PBHS. Many of the teams slated this season are fresh competition who the Warriors will meet for the first time in district play, including two-time state champions Madison.
“Our team has had a good off-season and they are in good shape,” said head coach David Pickens, now in his eighth season. “Many of the players have been on our starting roster for the last three seasons. They know the system. Couple the experience with strength and speed and that is a huge plus going into the season.
“Many of our key players, such as senior running backs Austin Savage and Hunter Pickens, have grown into the system,” coach Pickens said. “Pickens has been the quarterback for three years. He knows the plays. Two other seniors, Christian Gard and Tommy Morris, will be key offensive contributors and look to make a difference. Our squad will also be impacted by sophomores Braxton Kyle and Brooks Hodges.
“Defensively, the tone up front will be set by senior Lucas Larsen and Savage at defensive end,” Pickens said. “(Hunter)Pickens will also return at linebacker. But we also have opportunities for new faces. Morris was hurt last season and we look forward to his return. Kyle is in his second year at free safety. Gard is stronger this year at outside line backer. Junior Xavier Jabary and senior Jayden Miller will see time on the line on both sides of the ball.”
Bob Kyle and Ryan Panko will be assistant coaches for the 2012 season that will open Aug. 31st White City.
“It will be an exciting year. We are going to meet teams we haven’t faced in recent seasons.” Pickens said. “Madison, Little River and Lebo will be teams to watch. Centre also can’t be overlooked as they have tradition of winning toughness.”
“Warrior football 2012 will be ready for the first game,” he said. “We hope our loyal crowd will follow us with our new schedule.”
