Peabody-Burns rec announces winter schedule

Peabody-Burns Recreation Commission mailed its winter activity schedule to USD 398 patrons this past week. The schedule includes trips to sporting and musical events and dates for open basketball and weight room use for adults in the community.

A couple of the events have already taken place, or the deadline for reserving a ticket has passed.

On Jan. 5, a busload of Kansas State University Wildcats fans will leave at 9:30 a.m. from Peabody-Burns High School for a full day of NCAA Division 1 basketball in Bramlage Coliseum at Manhattan. The K-State men’s team will host Oklahoma State at 12:30 p.m. After a break to eat out, the fans will watch the women’s team play TCU at 6 p.m. The bus will return about 10 p.m. to PBHS. The cost is $48 per person, not including meals or snacks, and students younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult. There is only limited space available and reservations were to be made by Jan. 1.

Monster Jam, an annual monster truck event at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, will be at 7:30 p.m. Jan 12. A bus will leave at 6 p.m. from PBHS and return at about 11 p.m. Cost is $22 per person, those younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult, and registration must be turned in by Jan. 5.

Harlem Globetrotters will take to the hoops for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Jan. 25 at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita. A bus will depart at 5:15 p.m. from PBHS and return at 10:30 p.m. Cost is $26 per person, those younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult, and registration is due by Jan. 18.

Wichita Thunder hockey will take on the Allen Americans at 7:05 p.m. Feb. 9 at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita. A bus will depart at 5:30 p.m. from PBHS and return at 10:30 p.m. Cost is $18 per person, those younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult, and registration is one week in advance.

The final event will be a concert on Feb. 16 at the Orpheum Theatre in Wichita featuring the Count Basie Orchestra with the New York Voices. A bus will leave at 6 p.m. from PBHS and return about 10:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per person, those under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult, and registration must be made two weeks in advance.

The open gym basketball and open weight room for adults will be 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 6 to March 10. There is no cost. Locations are the Brown Gymnasium for basketball and the PBHS weight room. Join other adults and get some exercise playing pickup basketball or working out on the weight equipment. Open to adult men and women.

There is no transportation charge for any of the trips. The Peabody-Burns Recreation Commission covers that cost. Food, snacks, and souvenir items are not included in the cost of attending the event as listed for each activity.
