Peabody camper fire under investigation

Staff writer

An investigation into a structure fire Friday in Peabody is ongoing.

No one was injured.

At 4:52 p.m., Peabody fire department was dispatched to the 200 block of S. Olive St.

Local law enforcement was first on scene.

An unoccupied, unattended camper was fully engulfed.

The fire was extinguished quickly, within 15 minutes, but personnel remained on scene into the evening.

Hillsboro ambulance as well as Florence and Burns firefighters were dispatched but later recalled.

The camper was rendered a total loss.

“By the time we got there, it was basically just the frame,” fire chief Colten Glenn said. “I’d say it had been burning for a couple of hours before it was called in.”

Glenn attributed that to S. Olive St. being secluded and that a controlled burn was in that area.

“Whenever we had seen the smoke, we just assumed it was that controlled burn,” Glenn said.

The smoke was seen a few hours earlier under the controlled burn assumption but after a while was called in.

“We’re still trying to get our investigation finished up as far as what caused it,” Glenn said. “Law enforcement is working toward this whole deal.”

Colten said as of now, no conclusions have been reached.
