Plane makes emergency landing on U.S. 77

According to Marion County Sheriff Robert Craft, pilot Donald DeWitt, 71, of Norman, Okla., was forced to make an emergency landing in his biplane on U.S. 77 near the K-150 junction near Marion.

The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. Sunday. Sheriff Deputy Jimmy Philpott arrived at the scene and noticed the small aircraft on the road.

Craft said the plane suffered engine problems in the air and DeWitt tried to divert the plane to Marion Municipal Airport.

“He saw he wasn’t going to make it,” Craft said, so the pilot landed on the highway.

DeWitt clipped a power line along K-150 on his way down causing some damage to the plane on the left wing and propeller and the line.

DeWitt was not injured.

Federal Aviation Administration will conduct an investigation, Craft said.
