Despite opposition to a wind farm plan for the southern portion of Marion County, personalized license plates with three wind farm turbines set against a sunrise have made their appearance in the county.

Susan Berg in the vehicle division of the county treasurer’s office said 84 of the personalized license plates have been ordered in the county so far this year.

According to secretary of revenue Mark Burghart, the design is in honor of the state’s long history of embracing alternative energy.

The license plates are emblazoned with the words, “Powering the Future.”

“Kansas is a leader in alternative energy and this plate helps feature the fact the state has a long history of adopting technology that shapes the future,” Burghart said.

Earlier this year, Kansas was named the national leader in percentage of total electricity produced by wind power.

Personalized license plates can be ordered through the treasurer’s office. A temporary paper license plate will be given to customers, and the personalized metal tag will arrive in the mail.

To order one, customers need to bring their registration receipt, photo ID, and proof of insurance. They also need to pay the plate fee and any additional fees.

Applications for personalized license plates can be printed on the KDOR website before taking the application to the treasurer’s office.
