Post office reopens
nearly 2 years after flooding

Durham has reopened its post office nearly two years after devastating floods had residents picking up mail in Herington.
The lobby is now open 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Carrier Wayne Geis is glad residents will be able to pick up their mail indoors.
Mail had been delivered to drop boxes in a park.
“It was fine when there was no weather, but in the 100 mph winds in winter, there was no protection,” he said.
Packages often would not fit in the secure locker and he would need to track down their recipient.
His 154-mile route, which serves a “very rural” area of Marion, McPherson, and Dickinson counties, is challenging enough.
Geis drives a 1991 Buick Park Avenue that is tough and solid enough on most days, but he swaps it for a sloppy Jeep Wrangler during bad weather.
“I never drive a good car,” he said. “I always buy older cars, put a lot of miles on them, and move on to another one.”
