Preschool chefs take over Pizza Hut

Staff writer

Hillsboro Pizza Hut was taken over Thursday by apron-wearing preschoolers ready to make themselves perfect pizzas.

The trip was the culmination of a bread study begun weeks ago, teacher Lesli Beery said.

The hands-on instruction began with a gingerbread man bakery and hunt. Students then ground wheat, made wheat bread, baked gingerbread men, made cornbread, created oatmeal cookies, and flipped pancakes.

Students got to make their own personal pan pizzas under guidance of Brent Paquette, production and training supervisor at the restaurant.

Parents snapped photos as students got to choose what sauce they wanted and spread it over pizza crust.

Next, it was time to sprinkle cheese on the pizza and pick the perfect toppings to put on.

When each student’s pizza was exactly right, store employees slid the pizzas into an oven so they could bake to perfection.

After the pizzas were baked, employees cut the pizzas into four pieces and put them into boxes.

Students then got to sit at tables and enjoy the fruits of their labors along with cold drinks.

The next learning project will center on Valentine’s Day, Beery said.

Preschoolers will join in a nationwide project, Hearts Across America.

Valentines from across the country may be mailed to Miss Lesli’s Class, 1300 E Lawrence St, Marion KS 66861 or emailed to beeryles@usd408.com.

Head Start is enrolling for the 2025-2026 school year. Applications are being accepted at (620) 241-9590 and 418earlychildhood.weebly.com.
