Programs to focus on WWII POW camp

Author Daniel Markowitz will visit Peabody, Hillsboro, and Marion this coming week to publicize his new historical fiction book, “The Spoils of Victory,” inspired by stories of German prisoners of war in a World War II internment camp in Peabody.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, he will read from his book in the Ann Potter Room of Peabody Township Library, 214 N. Walnut St., and lead a conversation with community members who have memories of the POWs.

Memorabilia will be displayed, and refreshments served. A tour of the Eyestone Building, where POWs were held for two years, will follow the free program.

At 10 a.m. Monday, he will present a Lifelong Learning program at Parkside apartments, 1 Park Ave., Hillsboro.

He again will read from his book and lead a discussion of the history of POW camps in Kansas and interaction of German prisoners with farmers who hired them, particularly Mennonite farmers in Marion County.

At 1 p.m. Tuesday, he will discuss the history of POW camps and their significance to the state and nation at a free program at Marion City Library, 101 Library St.

Light refreshments will be served. Signed copies of his book will be available for purchase.
